Mood can be defined as a writer’s use of words to evoke emotional or mental states in the reader. Mood directs the emotional intensity and tenor of a work to be read. It is best illustrated through imagery, which also helps to intensify the mood. Mood is defined as the “general feeling” of an author’s section or selection from a piece of literature. A writer may include items in their work to deliberately evoke a specific mood and give the reader a new perspective on the subject being written about.īy using items and techniques like allusions, similes, and figurative language, a writer can create certain moods in their work. They just want to have fun.Ī mood is a feeling or atmosphere that exists within a writing piece. A lot of young writers think they are going to have to drag themselves through a thousand dull words until they finally get to the good stuff.Īnd don’t tell them that mood is one of the primary tools they’ll use in writing-they don’t want to hear it. What Is Mood?įirst, let’s face it: writing can be boring. In this way, mood becomes an integral part of the story. In literature and film, mood is conveyed through many different forms such as character development, dialogue and narration.įor example, in the novel The Red Badge of Courage, Stephen Crane conveys mood through character development: Henry Fleming’s nervousness before battle reflects the mood of panic that engulfs him at that point in time. In this context, mood is often referred to as “mood music.” Mood elements in films are designed to complement and enhance onscreen action and emotion. The term “mood” may also be used to describe visual elements of films as well as music and sound effects. It may be conveyed through the setting, characterization, syntax, dialogue, narration and imagery. Mood is the feeling that pervades a literary work or a film. Sometimes, it may be more interesting to look at how the characters’ actions and dialogue make the mood. Simply put, a sentence with a sad mood might say, “It’s raining outside.”Ī sentence with a happy mood would say, “The sun is out!” In more complex terms, it may be helpful to think about how writers use language elements in order to create mood. In simple terms, mood is the overall feeling of the writing. The tone of the work (the attitude toward the subject matter), which is one of the nuances of mood. The actions and interactions of characters. The language used by writers and directors (for example, it might be obscure or simple).A movie or book can do the same thing, of course. Perhaps you’ve experienced a song putting you in a good mood or a bad mood. In other words, mood is the feeling that is created in the reader or viewer by the work. Mood is the overall feeling of a piece of writing or film. On iOS, you get whatever notifications you have enabled in the iOS settings so I personally prefer the Android smartphone experience. On an Android smartphone you can also fine tune your smart notifications by selecting the specific apps that will be allowed to send notifications to your Garmin Vivoactive 3. Other tabs include challenges, calendar, news feed, and the More page for all of the other settings you have come to love on a Garmin device. I prefer this over the previous display of data. You can choose which order the cards appear and which cards appear by tapping on the Edit My Day button at the bottom. When you first launch the smartphone app you will see the My Day screen that shows your most recent workout, heart rate, stress level, calories in/out, weight, yesterday's stats, and stats for last 7 days. I love the new My Day view and am very close to finding the perfect Garmin GPS sports watch for my daily use again. It has gotten even better with the recent interface improvements. The app is very useful and provides an overwhelming amount of data. Garmin is one of the few companies that offers the Garmin Connect app for iOS, Android, and Windows 10 Mobile. Smartphone software and websiteĬollecting the data is important, but using that data for tracking trends, improving performance, challenging friends, and identifying problem areas is also very important. A test card number was given to use for the review. A PIN is needed for security and is something you setup when you enter your bank information. Hold the button, select the wallet icon, enter your PIN, and then hold your watch close to the wireless reader to pay. You also have the option to pay with Garmin Pay on the Vivoactive 3. Otherwise choose Done on the display to end your workout. If you want to continue, press the button again. It's quick and easy to get started and get your workout started. To get started on a run, lift up your arm, press the button, tap run, and then press the button again after GPS is connected. I recommend you spend some quality time customizing everything exactly how you want it and then be ready to tweak things as you perform your activity and find you want to view your data differently. For example, in the running app you can customize up to 3 data screens in a layout from one to four fields with timer, distance, pace, speed, heart rate, dynamics, cadence, temperature, elevation, compass, navigation, and other fields. However, there are plenty of options for most people and I am sure the majority of people will be satisfied by the options. There are a large number of settings and customization options available, but as a user of a high end Garmin device I find there are far fewer options on the Vivoactive 3 than on other devices like the Forerunner 935 or Garmin Fenix line. You can also reorient the button and interface via the Garmin Connect smartphone app, which is a great feature for those who wear the Vivoactive 3 on a different wrist or like a different button orientation. Most smart watches today have a mix of touchscreens and buttons for optimized navigation and while I prefer only buttons on my GPS sport watch, this arrangement works well on the Vivoactive 3. The display is a touch sensitive display with a single button on the right side and touch sensitive left side. The display size is the same, but the Vivoactive 3 has a higher resolution display too. The Garmin Vivoactive 3 is round, but is much smaller and lighter (half the weight) than my Fenix 3 HR, which piqued my interest. Battery: Rated for 13 hours in GPS training mode, and 7 days in smartwatch mode.Connectivity and sensors: Bluetooth Smart, ANT+, GPS, GLONASS, optical HR, barometer, compass, accelerometer, thermometer.Bands: Standard 20mm bands for massive variety of band options.Memory capacity: 7 timed activities and 14 days of activity data.Display: 1.2 inch (30.4mm) 240 x 240 pixels resolution transflective color screen. The easiest way to demonstrate this idea is by examining the Kuleshov Effect. In the practice of Sergei Eisenstein and his contemporaries, montage is primarily concerned with the idea that editing two or more shots together can affect the audience’s thinking on the relevant shots, creating a new idea whose impact goes beyond that of the two shots considered separately. Take a 16-Week Crash Course on the History of Movies: From the First Moving Pictures to the Rise of Multiplexes & Netflixīased in Seoul, Colin Marshall writes and broadcasts on cities and culture. He’s at work on the book The Stateless City: a Walk through 21st-Century Los Angeles, the video series The City in Cinema , the crowdfunded journalism project Where Is the City of the Future?, and the Los Angeles Review of Books’ Korea Blog. Follow him on Twitter at on Faceboo k.Montage editing is a style of film editing which, speaking generally, use the act of editing as a central artistic tool of film as opposed to a mere technical procedure to link different shots. Watch Battleship Potemkin and Other Free Sergei Eisenstein Filmsįree: Dziga Vertov’s A Man with a Movie Camera, the 8th Best Film Ever Made Hitchcock on the Filmmaker’s Essential Tool: The Kuleshov Effect The ideological climate that gave rise to Soviet montage theory may have changed, but the artistic principles its filmmakers discovered will, for the foreseeable future, hold true, underscoring the reliable effectiveness and surprising power of the simple cut.Ī Visual Introduction to Soviet Montage Theory: A Revolution in Filmmaking For more on the mechanics of Soviet montage, have a look at the fifteen-minute explainer from Filmmaker IQ above - or pay close attention to most any movie or television show or music video made over the past eighty years. They saw themselves as engineers, “joining shots the way a bricklayer builds a wall or a factory worker assembles a vehicle,”and Benzine examines sequences from two of the best-known fruits of these labors, Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin and Dziga Vertov’s A Man with a Movie Camera (both of which you can watch free online by following those links).īenzine also looks to more recent examples of Soviet montage theory in practice in everything from Dumbledore’s death in the Harry Potter movies to the shower scene in Psycho (a film by an avowed fan of the Kuleshov effect) to the final standoff in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. When they finally got some film stock, Soviet montage filmmakers, who had come to believe that “for film to reach its true potential, the cuts themselves should be visible, the audience should be aware of them, the illusion should be obviously constructed and not hidden,” got to work making movies that demonstrated their ideas. So while the nation built up the industrial capacity to produce film stock domestically, these filmmakers - much like the video essayists on the internet today - studied existing films, breaking them down, reassembling them, and figuring out how they worked. But after the Russian Revolution, which put an end to the importation of film stock, Russian filmmakers couldn’t shoot a frame. The government understood, in other words, the power of cinema as propaganda, and swiftly centralized the film industry. What’s more, that invention came out of the very revolution that put the Communists in power, after which the Soviet government “took a strong interest in film, because it recognized cinema for what it was - a powerful tool for social and political influence.” So says Craig Benzine, host of Crash Course Film History, in the series’ eighth self-contained episode, “Soviet Montage,” which tells the story of that cinema-changing editing technique. It would have scandalized many an American filmgoer of the mid-twentieth century to learn that the movies they watched - even the most wholesome Hollywood fare of the era - made extensive use of a Soviet invention. His theoretical and critical writings are remarkable for their often witty and ironic style and their unerring polemics. Lessing was a poet, philosopher and critic. In his celebrated biography of Mendelssohn's famous grandson, Felix, Larry Todd describes their friendship as one of the most "illuminating metaphors the clarion call of the Enlightenment for religious tolerance". Lessing was also famous for his friendship with Jewish-German philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. On 15 February 1781, Lessing, aged 52, died during a visit to the wine dealer Angott in Brunswick. She died in 1778 after giving birth to a short-lived son. In 1776 he married Eva König, who was then a widow, in Jork (near Hamburg). In 1771 Lessing was initiated into Freemasonry in the lodge "Zu den drei Rosen" in Hamburg. For example, in 1775 he journeyed to Italy accompanied by Prince Leopold. His tenure there was interrupted by many travels. In 1770 Lessing became a librarian at the Herzog-August-Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel. In 1765 he returned to Berlin, only to leave again in 1767 to work for three years as a dramaturg and adviser at the German National Theatre in Hamburg. From 1760 to 1765 he worked in Breslau (now Wrocław) as secretary to General Tauentzien. In 1752 he took his Master's degree in Wittenberg. Afra in Meissen (from 1741 onwards) he studied theology and medicine in Leipzig (1746–1748).įrom 1748 to 1760 he lived in Leipzig and Berlin and worked as reviewer and editor for, amongst others, the Vossische Zeitung. After visiting Latin School in Kamenz (from 1737 onwards) and the Fürstenschule St. His father was a clergyman and the author of theological writings. Lessing was born in Kamenz, a small town in Saxony. He is widely considered by theatre historians to be the first dramaturg. His plays and theoretical writings substantially influenced the development of German literature. They are all melting down, desperately scraping their faces away, or in halves, symbolic of fading identities. None of the characters’ faces are discernible. The techniques and layering of colors deliver an eloquent rendering of perspective and a sense of a dystopic world. It attracts the viewer with a sequential narrative, a left to right scan of the canvas being reminiscent of a movie scene. The painting was resold on auction at Christie's in 2016 for almost $9 million, establishing a record that still stands. To conceive his artworks, Ghenie first draws inspiration from the past of art and history, then combines them with pivotal aspects of modernism on the painted surface. 2021 was his record year with a total of over $39 million, and in 2022 he has already sold art for close to $30 million, especially thanks to two recent sales which brought him new personal records as well: Degenerate Art, 2016, sold at Sotheby's on May 19 for $9.3 million, followed a week later by Christie’s Hong Kong sale of Pie Fight Interior 12, 2014, for $10.4 million.Īdrian Ghenie, Self-portrait ‘en plein air’, oil on canvas, 190 x 230 cm, 2020, © Adrian Ghenie, His ascent is supported by a well-established knowledge of art history and consistent research, producing a curious angle and concern with disruptive characters of the past.Īdrian Ghenie, The Impressionists, oil on canvas, 220 x 300 cm, 2020, © Adrian Ghenie, Courtesy of Pace Gallery, LondonĮspecially through his auction performance, Ghenie’s strong and fundamental trajectory can be followed over the last years. Growing in popularity, both on the primary and the secondary market, critics debate the reason behind his increasing stardom, not unprecedented but also not as anticipated. A multidisciplinary artist of many virtues, Adrian Ghenie, born in Baia Mare, Romania, and now based in Berlin, represents a former artistic education, which is being validated through the exponential growth of his career. |
